What is Doxycycline?
Doxcycline is a Tetracycline Antibiotic that kills or stops the multiplication of certain infection-causing bacterias in your body. Tetracycline Antibiotics is a group of antibiotics produced by certain sepcies of the fungus Streptomyces. Tetracycline drugs (also known as broad-spectrum antibiotics) are effective against many different types of bacteria. Lloyd H. Conover invented Tetracycline in 1952 by chemically modifying a naturally-produced drug.
Doxycycline is used in the treatment of infections of the skin, bone, stomach, respiratory tract, sinus, ear, and urinary tract. Lyme disease and certain sexually transmitted diseases (gonorrhea and chlamydia) can also be treated with Doxycycline.
Doxycycline is also recommended for the treatment of Anthrax. On October 18th 2001, FDA issued a Public Health Advisory concerning the use of Doxycycline for Anthrax exposure. http://www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/NEWS/2001/NEW00774.html
